Cleveland Museum of Art

The museum and collection

The Cleveland Museum of Art was permitted the loan of a collection of medieval armor suits and arms from the Royal Armories in Leeds (UK). This exhibition was meant to remain in place for at least 20 years, which is why the conditions of the loan were very strict, especially when it came to security and conservation.

The assignment

The museum wanted to work with qualified suppliers. Only a limited number of companies passed the pre-selection phase. In a pre-tender, all working methods and references had to be described in depth, after which a formal tender followed. Price and quality were weighted and scored, leading the museum to select Meyvaert as the supplier.

We went to work, using the input from an architect to design the cases. This would become the very first project where we used extra white antireflective glass.

Specifically for this museum, we designed the cases with wood cladded plinths. As a result, we had to ship the assembled wooden plinths in conditioned containers in order to prevent damage by temperature and humidity.
